There May Be A Break In Service

Some things might get broken around here for a short while as I mess around with the database in preperation for the new whythehell.

The photos section has some phantom catagories in it to do with multi-level catagories for the new site. I’m hopefully going to changing hosts shortly when I decide on who to go with. All suggestions so far have looked good, I just need to look at reliablity and stuff for them soon, as well as cost. Bear with me though, we should be online and spanky and new soon.

What what!

This entry has the potential to seem terribly high brow. I apologise.

Anyway, last night I went to see The Ladykillers, a film by the Coen brothers. It’s a brilliant film, and I recommend you go see it. However, today I was reading the review of it in the Culture section by Cosmo Landesman. I’ve always hated his reviews because all seems interested in is saying every film is rubbish, then if a sequel comes out he always says he loved the original and the sequel is dross, etc. However, in his review of The Ladykillers, he says

“Mrs Munson says to Dorr: “You’ve never suffered piles? Piles is the human condition.” Sorry, but a woman like Mrs Munson would never talk like that to a stranger.

Then goes into a bit about how the Coens are fading because of gross out comedy. Right. Apart from Mrs Munson doesn’t say that to Dorr. She says that to a painting of her husband, before she even meets Dorr! Christ man, it’s setting up the character as a batty old woman. You can write what you like Cosmo about films, but at least get your reviews factually correct…

New Host

Ok, the hosting expires on this site in one month. Now, previously I had been happy with Easily.co.uk’s service. However, I’ve been messing around with the new whythehell today, and noticed that none of it works properly.

This is because it’s all been rewritten since I wrote this original site 18 months ago to take advantage of improvements in my own abilities. A couple of months ago I upgrading the hosting so I could have 200Mb of space to fit all of the pictures I have on the site. However, investigations to fix the new whythehell this afternoon seem to indicate that I am now running on an older version of PHP than previously at 4.0.6. So nothing like $_GET works anymore. All the image stuff is busted too, colours are all washed out on the auto-generated thumbnails. Yuck.

So I need a new host. I need 200Mb of space, reliability, sub-domains would be nice, e-mail capabilities (I have none beyond forwarding ATM), >PHP 4.1.0, MySQL. Bandwidth isn’t really an issue now that BUKC isn’t on this site, but more the better right? Any suggestions?

Need To Get Away

Slowly getting things sorted for going to India. Had some jabs, still need to get Rabies jabs and Malaria tablets too. I really cannot wait to go, I need to get away from so much at home. Work is stressful at the moment, and it seems to be affecting me.

For example, my imagination seems to have gone into overdrive in a very black manner. People saying something to me related to work will usually cause a vivid image/sound of a balloon being inflated and then exploding. Talking to a certain person makes other all the more disturbing things appear in my head. Luckily I’m off to Germany for 4 days in 10 days, going to takes lots of photos and try and de-stress. Heaven knows I need it.

In other thoughts, I was thinking that something to fill my evenings with was to join the Venture Scouts. Now, viewing the Scouts website would seem to suggest this has been replaced by “Networks”. Am I the only one who finds the website completely unfathomable? I can’t find any useful information about what’s involved!

Long Sore Weekend

Friday was a day off from work to go karting and boy did I need it. It’s been a stressful week and I needed the time away.

I went and picked Gareth up from Stratford and headed up to Middlesborough again for another kart race. The M1 was a total nightmare, as was the A1. Just made it in time to the circuit. First kart was a total nightmare too. It didn’t accelerate and more importantly, understeered all over the place.

Now, I hate understeer. My driving style is to turn in early and trail brake on turn in, to aid direction change. This gives me a problem with late apex corners, like the hairpin before the long straight at Warden Law. Still, it all works out ok the end. However, I do need a kart with good turn in. I can cope with oversteer easily using the educated right foot.

The replacement kart we had cured the understeer problem but still had no pickup compared to may other karts. Loads of people just accerated away down the straights, even when I got a better exit. Very frustrating.

Yesterday was quiet. Drove home from Rick’s (cheers for the floor again, I’ve never slept on so comfortable a carpet!) and then fell asleep for a while.

Lie in this morning, lovely home roast and the headed down to Bristol to visit Neal and dine at the wonderful Wagamama. Saw the GP first, incident packed, but as per usual none of them involved Michael Schumacher. Bit surprised nothing was done about him being alongside Rubens as they cross the line. Glad to hear Ralf is ok, but why oh why was he left sitting there in the car without attention for so long?

Vaccinations tomorrow for India, eep!

No Idea

Images form in the mind
the voice screams murder
it’s the voice in my head
no one else can hear the screams
uneven legs, I can’t walk straight
nothing to aim for
no direction
a compass with no north
telling people something
without knowing the truth
