I’d just written a long entry on my problems with XP, and my network card and how I was stuck using this laptop for online stuff at the moment, when the entry disappeared. Arse.

Never ever ever upgrade XP! I’ve had it working fine on my laptop for >2 years, rigorously avoiding installing any service packs or hot fixes. I installed all the critical updates and SP1, and lo and behold XP slowed down, IE6 won’t open new links, and I my USB2.0 card stopped working entirely (which means I can’t write CDs anymore, so my hard disk is filling up with photos). XP works perfectly provided you leave it alone – if it ain’t broke, by definition you can’t fix it, and if it is broke you’re up this creek without a paddle!
Ah, but you have made the mistake of going 2 years without a format and reinstall. The best idea with any major upgrades of hardware and software is to do that. I’ve already got SP1a installed on that machine and it’s working fine. Network card still isn’t though.
Re-in-stall? I wonder how I’m supposed to do that – I don’t have XP on CD… When I buy a new laptop I will insist on having the software on CD.
You didn’t get any CDs when you bought it? That’s a poor show! I’m sure if you were to ask a certain person they could send you one (not in the public domain of course).
Yeah, definately ask for the Installation CD – it’s only about a tenner extra, and I’d never use a supplier’s Recovery Disc over the real thing.
